NBPSWA is a provincial professional association incorporated under the New Brunswick Companies Act. It is governed by a volunteer Board of Directors — practicing PSWs, allied healthcare leaders, and Public Representatives — with standing Councils and Committees drawn from the membership.
Not a regulatory body. Personal Support Work is an unregulated occupation in New Brunswick. NBPSWA holds no statutory authority to license PSWs. Our standards, Code of Ethics, certifications, and professional conduct processes are voluntary professional commitments — given force through membership, employer adoption, and public trust.
Board of Directors
9 to 15 directors elected at the AGM for two-year staggered terms. A majority are Professional, Certified, or Specialty Certified Members; 20–30% are Public Representatives appointed to represent the interests of the people PSWs serve.
Officers
The Board elects a Chair, Vice-Chair, Secretary, and Treasurer from among its directors. An Executive Director may be appointed to manage day-to-day operations — the Board governs; the Executive Director manages.
Standing Councils
Councils develop the technical and professional content of NBPSWA's standards-setting work and recommend it to the Board for approval.
Standards Council
Develops and recommends the NBPSWA Standards Series — the Entry-to-Practice Competency Framework, Standards of Practice, Code of Ethics, Practice Guidelines, Clinical Skills & Procedures Manual, and Specialty Practice Standards.
Academic & Education Council
Reviews PSW education programs against the Standards Series and recommends Program Alignment Recognition to the Board.
Certification Council
Develops and administers the voluntary NBPSWA Certification Program, including entry-level and specialty certifications.
Standing Committees
Committees provide governance, conduct, and operational oversight on behalf of the Board.
Professional Conduct Committee
The Association's accountability mechanism for membership and certification, operating with defined and limited jurisdiction under Article XIII.
Finance & Audit Committee
Oversees financial management, recommends the annual budget, and oversees the annual audit or review.
Nominations & Governance Committee
Identifies and recommends Board candidates — including Public Representatives — and keeps the Bylaws and governance policies current.
Events & Recognition Committee
Organizes membership events, professional recognition, and public awareness initiatives.
Constitution, Bylaws & policies
The Association operates under the NBPSWA Constitution & Governance Framework (Version 2.4, Founding Edition 2026–2031), which replaces the 2025 Interim Bylaws. The current Constitution, Bylaws, and standards are available to members in the Member Portal and on request.
